Romantic Getaways: Destination Europe

by Kelly J. McGuire

Europe has long been a popular place for couples wanting a romantic city break. When one thinks of the stereotypical ‘romantic European city,’ many people will automatically think of Paris, with its iconic monuments and boulevards, or of Venice, with its famous canals and gondoliers. But there is a lot more to Europe than just these two cities and couples looking for a bit of romance will be able to find it in places as diverse as Wales, the Czech Republic and Cyprus.

For those of you who are looking for somewhere to spend Valentine’s Day next year, here’s a short list of some of the best European romantic getaways.

Amsterdam (Netherlands)

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam has earned a reputation as a tolerant and hedonistic city but it also has its romantic side. Its canals and traditional Dutch architecture hark back to a more romantic era and couples can recapture the beauty of the Golden Age with a visit to one of the city’s many museums. A visit to the Van Gogh Museum should be on every visitor’s list. Art enthusiasts will enjoy the chance to see Van Gogh’s masterpieces and those of his contemporaries. They will also be able to see Rembrandt’s masterpiece, The Night Watch, at the nearby Rijksmuseum, which houses a sizeable collection of post-Renaissance paintings and art works. The Flower Market at Singel Canal is also worth a look and is a great place to buy tulip bulbs for your garden (or window-box). For a real culinary feast, an evening out at the Sea Palace floating Chinese restaurant is highly recommended and can be included as part of a canal tour package.

Bruges (Belgium)

Bruges, Belgium

Bruge’s canals, cobbled streets and historic buildings make it an ideal romantic getaway. Its nickname, ‘Venice of the North’, is warranted and couples will enjoy taking a boat trip through its many canals or travel in style in a horse-drawn carriage. Our Lady’s Church is one of Bruge’s most visited monuments. The church combines Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles and houses Michelangelo’s famous Madonna statue, a timeless masterpiece carved from marble, and the tombs of the Dukes of Burgundy. The Minnewaterpark, also known as the ‘Lake of Love,’ provides a peaceful retreat from the bustling city and is a great place for a romantic picnic. Chocoholics should not pass up the opportunity to visit the Choco-History Museum, where they will learn more about the history and production of chocolate, one of Belgium’s favourite delicacies. Visitors should also take the opportunity to buy some of the beautiful lace for which the city is famous.
